Ellerton Hall is located in the heart of Shropshire, situated between pastoral England and the hills and mountains of Wales. This has led to Shorphsire offering some of the most beautiful country walks, helping you escape into the countryside.

Shropshire boasts some of the best-kept secret hikes in England. From short leisurely strolls through valleys, to more strenuous hill walks with breathtaking views, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Here is a list of walks we recommend when you stay at Ellerton Hall

1. Newport To Stafford Greenway Rail Trail

This is the perfect walking route for biking, walking and running. With a gentle slope for the majority of the walk, this route offers an 18km point-to-point trail. Starting from Newport you will follow the path for nearly the entire way between the two towns. The path offers lovely scenery of forests and open fields with benches to stop off for a picnic or to simply take it all in.

2. Lilleshall Discover Walk

This discovery walk is a 3.7km circular trail that is considered to be an easy route. Perfect for a leisurely stroll with the whole family. This route will take you around the beautiful gardens of Lillshall National Sports and Conferencing Centre, located in a secluded area of Telford.

Whilst the route is considered to be easy there are a few gates and several flights of steps throughout the walk. The majority of the walk is along surfaced paths with some meadow sections which can get a little muddy at times.

There is also a cafe bar at the start of the route so you can enjoy refreshments before or after your walk.

3. Haughmond Hill Abbey

Haughmond Hill offers many walking routes with a particular favourite being the abbey. This route heads out towards Shrewsbury and is a 4.8km trail and is great for hiking and running.

The route initially leads to the Abbey with the remains of the chapter house showcasing sculptures and statues from the 12th and 14th centuries. From there you can explore the surrounding fields and woodland.

4. Church Stretton

Soak up breathtaking views and stunning scenery as you take on the 10 km route of Chruch Stretton. Begin your walk through farmlands and up the hill to Cart Caradoc, and return through Houghs Coppice and All Stretton.

This route does have some steep sections where great care with footing is needed, especially in wetter conditions where the path is slippery.

5. Attingham Park and Deer Park Circular

Attingham Park is the perfect place to visit with all the family. With deers roaming freely as part of the trail this walk offers beautiful scenery, plus if you visit in the mornings you may even get to see them at feeding time. There are lots of facilities at Attingham Park including a park for the children, seating areas for daily picnics, toilets, and a cafe.

6. Carding Mill Valley

Carding Mill Valley offers many different spectacular walking routes all ranging in difficulty levels. The surrounding area is known as an area of outstanding natural beauty, with Long Mynd recognised as an important place for wildlife.

Depending on the route you choose the walks around Carding Mill Valley cover a variety of terrains, with some steep inclines to the top. Whilst it may require some endurance the views of the Shropshire Hills once you reach to peak are definitely worth the hard work. Depending on when you are staying at Ellerton Hall some of the paths can be muddy so make sure to pack appropriate footway.

7.The Wrekin

Standing at 407 metres tall, The Wrekin is a clear view from wherever you are in Shropshire. There are two main walking routes either up to the summit (4.8Km) or around the base (6Km).

The walk begins at the car park and takes you up a forested slope to the summit of the hill where you will see wonderful views of surrounding countryside. You will also spot an Iron Age hillfort and the Wreking Beacon.

Some of the routes are multi-use meaning you are likely to be sharing with mountain bikers and runners.

8. The Woodbridge Inn and Ironbridge

The Woodbridge Inn is situated on the River Severn banks with an outside terrace with views across the river, perfect for summer walks. This route follows an old railway line through the Industrial Revolution’s birthplace to Ironbridge crossing the famous Iron Bridge. Along the walk, there are also opportunities to stop off at some of the museums.

Ellerton Hall is a classic English country house, located in the beautiful rural county of Shropshire, available for you to host your celebrations and exclusive holidays.
